Gluten Free at The OP Cafe, Santa Monica, CA

I love brunch. I would go every day if I could so I am always looking for new celiac friendly brunch locations. I am excited to add the OP Cafe to my Santa Monica list (Check out my reviews for Blu Jam, True Food Kitchen, Erin McKenna’s, and Kye’s in Santa Monica/Brentwood!).

The OP Cafe offers daily brunch and a huge menu. They have gluten free menu items directly noted on the menu. However, there are even more menu items that can be made gluten free! They do not carry gluten free bread, but they do offer gluten free pancakes, waffles*, and more. Their eggs and meats are gluten free as well!

What about cross contact? I spoke with our wait staff immediately and when I inquired about gluten free, she asked if I have celiac disease. Yes, she brought up celiac disease!!! Yay! The staff is alerted regarding the allergy/celiac disease and will follow their allergy protocolsFor celiac disease, they will use clean surfaces and separate utensils to avoid cross contact. If you have celiac disease, the gluten waffles are made on the same iron as regular waffles*—Although they will clean the waffle iron, I was not comfortable and will not order them.

Gluten Free Pancakes, Eggs, and Ham Steak!

I ended up ordering gluten free pancakes, ham steak, and scrambled eggs. Absolutely delicious. HUGE portions and cheap!! How is that possible in LA? I’m not sure, but it made me super happy! When the wait staff brought out my meal, they repeated the order back to me “This is the gluten free, for celiac disease,….” Love it.

Breakfast Tacos

My husband ordered the gluten free breakfast tacos with chorizo. He was surprised on how large and filling the portion sizes were and he would definitely order it again. I found the sauce to be a bit spicy, but not overpowering.

As for the rest of the visit, we lucked out because we just missed a huge rush of people. The wait time can be long so expect a wait. No reservations are accepted. There isn’t any designated parking so street parking is your best bet. But it is totally worth it!

**This review solely reflects my own honest opinion. I was neither paid nor given a complimentary meal for my visit here. Please note that kitchen protocols and menus can change at any time. Make sure to speak to the staff at any restaurant before eating to make sure that they can accommodate your dietary restriction.**
