First of all, thank you all for your awesome gluten free San Francisco recommendations! I am happy to share that I was well fed during my trip there and that I found a wonderful lunch spot within a 10 minute walk of my conference!!
Introducing.. Hot Spud! Located right in the Westfield Mall, Hot Spud can be found in the food court. There is also a location in Fisherman’s Wharf, but I didn’t have time to visit it. Heres the idea…you build your own baked potato (sweet or regular) from scratch or select from a list of signature spuds. You can also make a salad (but trust me…you want the potato!). Protein options include steak, chicken, shrimp, sausage, and pork. Vegetarian options are plentiful too. Full menu is available here.
What about the gluten free options? Everything is gluten free except for wonton strips, croutons & blue cheese!! All signature Spuds are gluten free too. Each item is kept in different bins and the wonton strips were kept in a jar to prevent cross contact. I told the staff that I have celiac disease and they alerted everyone and had “GLUTEN ALLERGY” attached to my order. They changed their gloves and explained the sources of gluten and the ways they prevent cross contact. Since the bleu cheese, croutons, and wonton strips are separated I was very comfortable. The grill is entirely gluten free. You can watch the staff make your potato and I was very happy with the result.
What did I order? I ordered the steak potato 4 times (yes I loved it!) and the BBQ pork with a sweet potato once. The steak spud includes grilled steak, alfredo sauce, sautéed mushroom, caramelized onion, corn, peas, green onion. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! THE PORTIONS ARE HUGE!! Super filling and delicious. Hot Spud gives you ample toppings and I greatly appreciated that as I couldn’t eat dinner till after 8PM every night.
Oh! They also have dessert! And both dessert options are GLUTEN FREE!! There are two options: 1) the Sweet sweet potato (Sweet Potato, whipped cream, coconut sugar, candied walnut, cinnamon) 2) The Sweet Potato Brownie. On my 3rd day in San Francisco, I was so intrigued the I just HAD to try the sweet potato brownie!! It didn’t taste like potato (thankfully!) but it was super sweet and delicious. I picked up one for my gluten-eating friend and she loved it too!
Would I go back? YES! I did….5 times. I went for every single lunch. Why? It was safe, delicious, filling, fast, and reasonably priced. The staff recognized me every day and really understood celiac disease. I didn’t have to miss out on networking because I could easily carry it back to conference and eat with everyone else. That meant so much to me and I am very grateful!
