After so many of my celiac friends raved about Modern Bread & Bagel, I just HAD to go the minute I was back in NYC. Located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Modern Bread & Bagel is one of the newest dedicated gluten free restaurants and has the very best GLUTEN FREE BAGELS (!!!!) in all of New York. The restaurant is also kosher.
I didn’t have too much time to spare as I was heading to Jessica’s wedding (@TastyMeditation) so I went to pick up a bagel for me and a breakfast sandwich for Ryan. When I arrived, I was overwhelmed by the options.
There were MULTIPLE flavors of REAL, FRESH, NORMAL SIZED BAGELS. After having to endure mostly frozen & small bagels since my celiac diagnosis, I was super excited for these. AND there were so many spreads available. I ordered a plain bagel with strawberry cream cheese. My favorite pre-celiac. The bagel was toasted and was perfection. I was SO glad that I bought a second bagel to take on my flight back to LA.
I ordered the breakfast grilled cheese on a bagel for my husband. He was working that day so I brought it home to him. He didn’t realize it was gluten free and panicked when I kissed him. Needless to say he LOVED his breakfast!
Now for dessert…OMG OMG! So many delicious options. Sadly, they ran out of their cinnamon buns, but I was able to pick up a brownie (for me) and a carrot cake cupcake (for my husband).
Modern Bread & Bagel is CLOSED on Saturdays!
If you go on Sunday, expect a LONG wait. Even for take out, I waited over 30 minutes to even reach the counter. The wait time for sit down was much much longer.
If you plan to get take out, note that not all menu options are available for take out. Mostly the pastries, breakfast sandwiches (extra 20 minute wait), and bagels. Here is the dine in menu and here is the take out menu.
Try to arrive as early as possible so you can try everything you want! This place is popular so items sell out quickly.
Would I go again? DEFINITELY! Modern Bread & Bagel was wonderful and fills a huge void: CELIAC FRIENDLY GLUTEN FREE BAGELS! Love the options & how the entire bakery is dedicated gluten free. I loved every item I tried and I cannot wait to go back and try more.
