As I said before, I am not a huge fan of ground beef, but when I have a random craving for a nice juicy burger The Counter is my go-to in Los Angeles! The Counter has several locations around Los Angeles (as well as other parts of the country) so it is super important to check with each individual location to make sure that they safely accommodate celiac and that they have all the features listed below. I have personality visited the Marina Del Rey location multiple times as well as the Toluca Lake location (perfect if you are visiting the Hollywood sign or Universal Studios).
I love the Counter as they make gluten free easy with their separate gluten free menu (so clear & easy to understand!) complete with fries (in a dedicated fryer!!) and a gluten free bun that is actually one the best I have ever had. I always alert the staff that I have celiac disease and need extra precautions taken (clean surfaces, separate utensils, etc). They have always handled my questioning very well!
I don’t feel limited in any way by the gluten free options–there are so many. The gluten free menu is huge!! You are given a piece of paper with the menu on it and you check off what items you want in your build-your-own burger, salad, or bowl! Starting with the proteins, you have the option of chicken, turkey, organic bison, Mahi Mahi Fillet, or beef as well as the size of the burger (1/3 lb, 1/2 lb, or 1 lb). For the style, you can have a gluten free bun (which is soft but not crumbly!) or on fresh greens (lettuce blend, organic mixed greens, baby spinach or kale). Want some cheese? There are 10 gluten free cheese options to choose from!! Want some dressing/sauce? 19 gluten free sauce options! Wow!
And now for the best part? The toppings—you can choose as many as you want!! There are too many options to list...but I always get (now don’t judge me please!) fresh mozzarella, spinach, pineapple, carrot strings, tomatoes, cucumber, pickles, hard boiled eggs, and roasted red peppers. Weird combination? Definitely. Best combination? 100%. You can also have premium topping options like sautéed mushrooms, sunny side up egg, avocado, guacamole, and applewood smoked bacon for a small surcharge. Not feeling creative? You can also order directly off a menu with pre-made burgers, salads, and sandwiches.
As for sides, they have regular shoestring fries and sweet potato fries available–personally I prefer the sweet potato. Again, the locations I visited have dedicated fryers but remember to check with yours! Out of the OVER 10 different gluten free sauces, I always choose the garlic aioli sauce that is heavenly. There are also veggie skewers and beef chili available.
I usually avoid chains, but not The Counter. It will remain one of my favorites. For the locations I have visited, I love their understanding of celiac. I love the dedicated fryers. I love having SO many options and not feeling left out. Thank you, The Counter! ❤
