I recently went to visit my maid of honor (Lauren) & her fiancé in Houston, TX. My husband surprised me with a trip to see her & attend an Ed Sheeran concert (isn’t he the best?!). It was my first time in Houston, but luckily, Lauren really understands celiac disease. She was with me the day I was diagnosed. As an avid baker, she perfected gluten free FROM SCRATCH baking recipes. She knew to use separate everything–bowls, utensils, sugar, etc. She knew what to say when talking to restaurants or findings safe brands. She is truly a celiac pro. With that being said, I even had gluten free brownies waiting for me when I arrived in Houston. Starting off the Houston getaway strong!
When it came time to pick a place to eat dinner, she suggested Bellagreen. I called them to verify and was happy to hear that they have a fully labeled menu clearly indicating gluten free & take many precautions against cross contamination. I grilled them on utensil use–which they assured me that they use separate clean utensils for gluten free and clean prep areas.
Bellagreen has several locations across Houston (apparently they have locations in Dallas too??), making it super convenient to eat dinner. When we arrived, I was overwhelmed by the options. I could have anything from burgers to pasta to salads to desserts. They even had lots of dairy free options, also clearly marked. The cashier confirmed my medically necessary gluten free and relayed it to the kitchen.
I settled on the Paleo Spaghetti Squash Bolognese described as “roasted spaghetti squash “noodles” in oregano, thyme & chipotle pepper marinara sauce with ground beef; finished with basil & parmesan.” IT WAS DELICIOUS!!!! It was a tad bit spicier than I anticipated, but the flavors were incredible. 10/10 would recommend.
I then ordered the creme brulee for dessert, which was large and wonderful. It came with fresh whipping cream and a HUGE chunk of chocolate on top. I’m always worried about portion size when I eat out, but this restaurant was not skimpy.
My experience was fantastic. This is a fast casual restaurant, where you order your food at a counter and then sit down at a table and wait for the food to be brought to you. It would be great for larger groups, especially with dietary restrictions (in my group alone we had 1 gluten free, 1 persons with diabetes who restricts carbs/sugars, and 1 vegetarian). It took us about 20 minutes to receive our food and when mine was brought out the server said indicated gluten free, which made me even happier. I really loved my dinner at Bellagreen & wish they had locations in LA.
Stay tuned for more gluten free in Houston, TX! 🙂
