Hello gluten free-ers! Hope you are all staying warm despite this winter storm on the east coast. Ry was visiting for the weekend so we took advantage of the opportunity to try new Charlottesville restaurants, one of which was Petit Pois, a French restaurant located on the downtown pedestrian mall. Petit Pois is located at 201 E Main Street, Charlottesville, VA. We were very lucky to dine on an evening that had the 3 course menu for $23 dollars! An incredible deal as many of their entrees are $23+! Of course, we took advantage of this.
Atmosphere/Location: The restaurant is very small and comfy. They do not take reservations, which is unfortunate due to the size of the place. They also do not validate parking. However, this restaurant is perfectly situated! Right by the Paramount Theatre and Jefferson Theatre, this is the ideal place to eat before catching a show.
Gluten free options: This restaurant does not have a labeled gluten free menu. However, the staff was very knowledgable and happy to triple check everything with the chef. In fact, when I asked about the Surf and Turf option, the staff inquired about the severity of my allergy because one of the vegetables is fried in a fryer with gluten. When I told him I could not have shared fryers, he happily informed me that it would be no problem at all to adjust the dish. I was impressed that the staff knew that shared fryers are not okay for people with allergies. Sadly, there is no gluten free bread. Most of the options were indeed gluten free or could be made gluten free. I ended up settling on the sweet potato bisque, surf and turf (ribs with scallops), and chocolate mousse–see the amazing photos!
Quality of food: AMAZING! Talk about flavor here! My sweet potato bisque was hearty and
sweet, with a bit of kick. It came with spiced cashews. A unique combo but it worked well together (note: I picked out the cashews because I don’t like the texture of nuts..I know…I’m weird…but I could definitely still taste them and it was a great touch!). As for the entree, perfectly seasoned! The ribs were cooked very well while the scallops were slightly undercooked for my liking (I prefer very cooked, but they were still cooked enough!). The vegetable puree (not sure of technical term) was great too. And now for the dessert, DELICIOUS CHOCOLATE MOUSSE! OH MY! Need I say more?
Portion size: Surprisingly large! The soup was a large bowl, which was unexpected. The entree was larger too–4 scallops and two ribs. And the dessert was decent sized too. I have to say I was happily surprised and pleasantly full when I left.
Cost: Pricy if there is not a special deal. But the 3 course meal for $23 was an amazing deal!!! And was well worth the money.
Pros: knowledge of staff, gluten free options, portion size, quality of food
Cons: no labeled gluten free menu, no reservations accepted
GF&G rating: 8.5/10! Would return happily!!
That’s it for now! Have a great rest of your week and be on the look out for more gluten free reviews 🙂
