Over my winter break, Ryan and I spent quite a bit of time at the Union Square Holiday Market and found ourselves hungry but unwilling to stray too far from the beautiful shopping area. In the mood for brunch, Ryan stumbled upon The Grey Dog and inquired about their gluten free options. Low and behold…they had TONS! So we immediately strolled over to the restaurant around 2:30pm. And our first thoughts…it must be good because the place was PACKED at 2:30pm!!! And let me tell you…it was fantastic!
The Grey Dog has several locations in NYC: 242 West 16th Street (Chelsea), 90 University Place (Union Square/NYU–we went to this location!), 49 Carmine Street (West Village) and 244 Mulberry Street (Lolita).
The Union Square location was small and cozy. We immediately went up to the counter to order and was told that a table would surely open up before our food arrived. I explained to the staff that I have celiac and cross contamination is a huge problem for me. The staff was EXTREMELY knowledgable and could tell me exactly what was and was not gluten free and how to modify items to be gluten free.
I ordered the Grey Dog’s Breakfast which included eggs (any style), choice of meat (ham, sausage or bacon–I chose ham), pancakes, and home fries. I was told I could not have home fries so instead they substituted in fruit! In terms of pancakes, this restaurant has gluten free pancakes and bread!!!! And the best part is….they use a separate surface and utensils to make the pancakes which is great for preventing cross contamination!! I always am weary of pancakes due to potential shared surfaces but this restaurant has it covered. The staff was very on top of my dietary restriction and treated it like an allergy. In fact, they didn’t even flinch–seems like they have quite a few gluten free-ers here.
When I received my meal after a short wait, I was told it was prepared for an allergy, which made me feel comfortable! IT WAS HUGE! And delicious. The pancakes were fluffy and everything was cooked to perfection.
There are only a few negatives I can think of…1) lack of space 2) menu is not clearly marked gluten free. However, like i said the staff was super eager and knowledgable, but it would be nice to know exactly what I could have to keep my options open.
Will I return? YES! There is a 10,000% chance of this. Best gluten free breakfast place I have had in NYC so far.
Have you tried the Grey Dog? What is your favorite NYC breakfast/brunch restaurant? Share and I’ll definitely try to visit!
