Happy Halloween, gluten free-ers! I hope you all had a fun and safe weekend. This weekend was spent partaking in traditional Halloween festivities including getting dressed up, picking out pumpkins at the pumpkin patch, carving pumpkins, and enjoying fall foods. Tonight I bring you a staple fall tradition: (gluten free pie)
The Pie Chest (http://thepiechestcville.com): Located at 119 4th St. NE. Exciting news for all of you gluten free pie-lovers!! Located right on the downtown pedestrian mall in Charlottesville, PIE CHEST is a pie shop filled with sweet and savory pies. Ryan was visiting me this weekend and while waiting for the puppy costume parade to begin, we decided to get some dessert. I am a gelato girl through and through so I automatically for Splendora’s (see future post). However, Ryan is obsessed with apple pie and pretty much anything apple related so off to the Pie Chest we went. I assumed they didn’t have anything gluten free so I was quite surprised when I walked through the door and saw not one but two gluten free pies. Before I got my hopes up, I asked “If this for people with allergies?” and the wait staff informed me that yes, yes it was. A baker comes in with SEPARATE gluten free equipment and makes the gluten free pies fresh daily using special equipment and taking care. How cool is that?!? I did not actually try the pie because I have never had pie and do not like nuts and their pie flavors were a little too filled with nuts for the day (yes, I am too picky…I know!). But see below for the savory and sweet options for gluten free for the day. By the looks of how many pieces were missing, the gluten free has to be pretty good!! They rotate flavors daily so I will definitely be back to try a non-nut flavor pie!! Check it out if you are in town. But remember to always speak with the staff to make sure that they can accommodate your allergy still—protocols can change at any time!
UPDATE (MAY 2016): I HAVE EATEN THEIR PEANUT BUTTER CHOCOLATE GLUTEN FREE PIE AND IT WAS AMAZING!!!
