Gluten Free Philadelphia—Part 1: Gluten Free Bakeries

Philadelphia: home of the Philly cheesesteaks and pretzels…..but also amazing gluten free bakeries (specifically the Happy Mixer, see below) that easily rival those of NYC?!? Oh yes….And since my parents now live in Philadelphia I am lucky enough to try new restaurants and bakeries. Although I have quite a large list of restaurants that I adore in Philly, I am craving some gluten free cupcakes right about now so for this post, I am going to share some of the Philly area bakeries that I have visited and, of course, sampled.

Philadelphia Area Bakeries

The Happy Mixer Gluten Free Bakery: ( Located at 4275 County Line Road, Chalfont, PA. By far, my favorite bakery in Philly!!! This place has a HUGE selection and it is entirely 100% gluten free. Their staff cannot even bring gluten into the bakery in their own lunches. There is absolutely no gluten whatsoever allowed in this bakery—making it the perfect bakery for those of us with Celiac or gluten allergies. The dinner rolls are the best I have had—and these (along with the baguettes and loaves of bread) freeze very well and are not dry or crumbly at all. Now, my favorite favorite favorite part: The Happy Mixer has the most wonderful gluten free donuts ever!!! My mom, who is not currently gluten free and is a Dunkin Donuts addict (sorry, mom), cannot even tell the difference! They are the perfect consistency and flavor. I can never decide which to get so I end up with several of the double chocolates and cinnamon sugar. The chocolate chip muffins are fantastic too! Who am I kidding? It’s all amazing! If you are interested in any of their menu items, just comment and I can guarantee you that I have tried it–no shame here! Thankfully, I do not live in Philly or my entire paycheck would go to this bakery. Also, thankfully, my parents do live in Philly so every holiday I get to enjoy the wonderful goodness that is The Happy Mixer Gluten Free Bakery. Whenever I visit my parents, I load up my carryon suitcase with gluten free dinner rolls, baguettes, donuts, cookies, cupcakes, and brownies. Just an FYI: Philadelphia airport TSA will stop you and personally search your luggage for “odd shaped items” if you follow my lead and completely stuff your suitcase full of these goodies. Since this happens rather frequently, most of the TSA staff knows me pretty well so they just ask me what treats I am bringing back this time…I can promise you that you will not regret going there!!!!!!

Grandma’s Grotto: Located at 986 Easton Rd, Horsham, PA. This family own bakery/restaurant has an entirely gluten free bakery, complete with cupcakes, cookies, breads, cake, cannoli, and more! My mom’s side is 100% Sicilian Italian and believe me when I tell you that very few Italian baked goods impressed my grandmother (AKA “Nanny”). However, Nanny raved about these gluten free cannolis and would refuse to get them anywhere else (gluten free or not). That is the highest compliment from a true Italian. Grandma’s Grotto is also a restaurant offering many many gluten free options—but that’s a whole separate blog post. Stay tuned!

Sweet Megan Baking Company: ( Located at 234 Holland Rd, Southhampton, PA. All of their treats are the free of the top 8 allergens—including gluten. I tried a chocolate chip cookie dough spoonful (which is basically a cake pop but on a spoon) and a chocolate cupcake—see below for photos. Both treats were good, but the Happy Mixer and Grandma’s Grotto had much better selections and portion size. However, this is a wonderful place for individuals with multiple food allergies!! Definitely safe for us Celiacs!

Well, hope you can try out these great Philly finds! Do you have any favorite Philly bakeries I should check out when I fly home for Thanksgiving??
